AttractionsThe unique and most exciting feature of this area is the abundance in marine mammals in the bay which is flanked by two marine nature reserves and therefore rich in food for the resident whales and dolphins.
During July to September every year, Southern Right Whales migrate to this part of the Indian Ocean to calve. There are organised boat trips all year round to see Brydes whales and dolphins. Huge schools of dolphin surfing the breakers or leaping clear of the blue sea, are a regular sight throughout the year. Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary offers visitors safari's conducted by experienced rangers where you can expect to see many species of monkeys as well as a large variety of forest dwelling birds. After soaking up the splendor of a living forest, you can relax on the sunny deck of the restaurant while enjoying a meal or a cocktail. Birds of Eden is the largest single free-flight aviary in the world, and incorporates an indigenous forest with waterfalls and elevated walkways. Previously caged birds from every corner of the globe live here in free flight. This is not somewhere you want to rush through, so allow enough time to really soak up its splendor Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre at Plettenberg Bay offers a truly unique Wildcat Experience. Guests are taken on a guided tour to meet captive-bred furry felines, living in a semi-natural environment. So close, you can hear them purr… The Garden Route is home to some of the most extraordinary mountain biking in the counrty. From the lush forests and sweet tasting streams to the spectacular heights of the Outeniqua Mountains this area has it all. Equitrailing specializes in horse trails through pristine indigenous forests and can incorporate biking, canoeing, abseling and hiking. The Plettenberg Bay Country Club has a unique 18 hole golf course in the middle of a private nature reserve. Here one may frequently see the infamous Knysna Loeries whilst enjoying a game of glof on this immaculatey kept course. A 9 hole course is also available at Goose Valley and a Mashie course at Rietvlei. Other activities in the area include, Sea kayaking, hiking, fishing, blackwater tubing and many more. Plettenberg Bay is however best known for its spectacular long white sand beaches.
