Honeywood Farm

Description

Honeywood Farm has been in the Moodie family since 1817 and borders the wild and wonderful Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve up against the Langeberg Mountains.

It is a nature lover's paradise and offers hiking, mountain biking, birding, horse riding, and swimming in rivers and pools all in a peaceful and secure environment.

The farm is a member of the Grootvadersbosch Conservancy, which contains large areas of mountain fynbos, Knysna type forest and some rare examples of unspoilt renosterveld or Themeda grassland.

Beyond the Nature Reserve lies the Boosmansbos wilderness area; one is of the best protected areas in the country.

Facilities

Honeywood offers a variety of different types of accommodation - sleeping from 2 to 12 people.

It has a Bush Camp and isolated Cottages in the hills for those who want to break away from the hustle and bustle of city life. They are fully equipped so all you need to bring is your food.

Scattered around the main farm house are other cottages. All Cottages have an outside sitting area in Summer and fireplaces inside for cold winter's nights. Wood is provided for these fires and for cooking on the coals if you wish to braai.

These cottages are grades with a three star grading from the tourism grading council.

The Bush Camp is built over a ruin, dating back to 1730 and 9 - 12 are able to sleep around the ancient walls which divide the area in three convenient divisions. The wooden walls slide open offering spacious views across the farm.

The Bush Camp has all the essential comforts - gas hot water, stove and fridge. Although there are comfortable beds and mattresses we ask guests to bring their own pillows and duvets.

Although cttages are fully self-contained, they are not serviced.

Directions

Travelling from Cape Town on the N2: Pass Swellendam on the N2 for 11km. Just beyond Buffelsjags BP Petrol station on your right (the one with the goats and bunnies etc) take the next turn off to your left that is sign posted Suurbraak R324. You are now travelling alongside the base of the mountain the road twists through the little village of Suurbraak be on the look out for meandering donkeys and malingering chickens. Carry on along this road. Ignore the turn off that says Barrydale over Tradow pass and keep going straight until the road turns into gravel. You will start seeing our wooden signs that say Honeywood and have a red reflective arrow. There are also signs that read Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve. Follow these. The road eventually rises to a confusing intersection. Do not turn right or left carry on 'straight'. The road dips and comes to a T-junction. Take a left here and its now that you have to wind down your window and take a deep breath of fresh air because you are almost there. Just ahead the road splits - you need to take the left fork. Carry on a bit and you will see our wooden sign at our entrance on the left. Take the top drive way to the main house to collect your key and be shown to your cottage.
