A mere 500 m from the N1 and major routes, it offers easy access to business, recreational and other sites of importance. It is wind shielded by shady trees planted by renowned botanist, the late Professor Christo Pienaar and overlooks Table Mountain and the Peninsula. Three rooms, designed for both comfort and quality, open onto vine covered patios and a rustic garden. We would like to welcome you at Niederheim where affordable, professional service is offered in an inviting, tranquil environment. Niederheim is the latest addition to a growing list of guest houses and bed-and-breakfasts in the popular, up-market, northern Cape Town suburb of Loevenstein, Bellville. Unlike the Castle of Loevenstein from which 17th century Dutch intellectual and founder of modern international law, Hugo de Groot, escaped from political internment, its name-bearer in the Northern suburbs of Cape Town is a haven for academics, professionals and business people.
This neighbourhood was developed two generations ago on the southern slopes of the Tygerberg hills on the former Loevenstein wine estate. Here many generations of settlers to the Cape of Good Hope once produced wines that contributed to the fame of the Western Cape wine lands. The fertile soil and mild climate that made it suitable for wine production, now sustain lush evergreen gardens that line its wide, winding streets.
Small wonder that the late Professor Kristo Pienaar, botanist of 50/50 fame, settled in Loevenstein. His former property borders on Niederheim. His was a time when fencing between properties was the exception in this friendly neighbourhood. The garden of this avid horticulturist and indigenous plant enthusiast subsequently knew no borders.
The evergreen Natal mahogony and the sausage tree (Kigelia pinnata) that frame the entrance to Niederheim are some of the living monuments to this remarkable man who planted them and who contributed so much to conservation in the Tygerberg area. Sausage trees naturally grow in the tropical savanna of the Limpopo province and further north. This might be the only one known in Cape Town outside of Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. It now is a mature tree adorned with a myriad of maroon cup-shaped flowers in spring. When it first started to flower in the spring of 1992, however, Kristo Pienaar was as excited as a boy and photographed it enthusiastically for his collection of pictures that illustrated numerous of his articles in gloss magazines and his coffee table books on gardening and plants.
These trees from tropical Africa inspired Niederheim’s lattice fencing, giving it an exquisite feel of a traditional Zulu lapa. This ambiance is enhanced by a collection of Swazi beer pots that decorate the porches of the guest rooms. Reminiscences of the wine lands heritage of Loevenstein mingle with African themes. Cape Dutch pillars frame the entry and porches. The newly planted ornamental vines are steadily making their way up to cover the hard wood beams to provide a shady pergola where a glass of good Cape wine can be enjoyed after a day’s hard work. A wine vat serves as post box. Hopefully Niederheim will serve as a place of reconciliation between the progeny of settlers and native peoples.
